Viscocel Enhances SMA Performance at Millennium Stadium

At Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, Viscocel SMA fibre was used in Tarmac’s Masterpave covering for public walkways outside the ground and, inside, the base surface on which the stadium’s removable pitch is constructed. Tarmac benefited from Viscocel’s stabilising properties in achieving a high degree of accuracy when laying the Masterpave. The accuracy demanded was unusually high, with tolerances of only 5mm permissible across the entire area on which the playing surface stands. This ensures that there is no discernible misalignment between the adjacent metre square pallets of turf that go to make up the pitch.

Around the perimeter of the pitch, Tarmac’s Mastertint classic red, also featuring Viscocel, was used to provide the walking area used by camera crews and for advertising hoardings. Walkways outside the stadium were laid using Mastertint in natural golden.
