Excel Fibre Technology’s Viscocel SMA fibre and pellets have been developed to provide a high performance bitumen modifier for tougher, quieter, smoother road surfaces.
Proven to deliver SMAs with enhanced elasticity and load spreading ability, Viscocel has repeatedly demonstrated its effectiveness in holding bitumen in position around the stone aggregate during the laying process, thereby producing road surfaces with optimum performance characteristics.
The Viscocel range includes two fibre pellet formulations:
- Viscocel 500
- Viscocel 450
and a loose fibre option:
Viscocel 500 SMA Pellets
Viscocel 500 pellets are supplied in 500Kg bags and by bulk tanker and are designed to be used with the SMART refibreising system. The compaction of the pellets minimises their volume for transportation and handling, while the SMART system ensures they are fully refibreised prior to adding to the SMA mix.
Viscocel 450 SMA Pellets
Viscocel 450 is a wax-bound fibre pellet for direct addition to the SMA mix. The pellets are supplied in 3Kg, 4Kg and 4.5Kg bags for direct, manual addition to the mix, and in half tonne bags or by bulk tanker for silo delivery systems. The wax binder allows the pellet to be compacted less than a pure fibre pellet, which ensures it will disperse in the dry aggregate mix even with fine, 6mm aggregate, but has the level of stability required for transportation and handling.
Viscocel LF
Viscocel LF loose SMA fibre is supplied in various bags sizes to suit the mixer and includes low melt bags in 3Kg, 4Kg, 4.5Kg and 6Kg sizes for direct addition to the mixer or 9Kg and12Kg bags for feeding through the Krendl 2000 fibre delivery system, which directly feeds the processed fibre to the SMA mix. The Krendl is necessary to ensure the loose fibre is fully ‘open’ prior to addition to ensure optimum uniform dispersion in the SMA. Other bags sizes are available and should be requested through Excel's support team at the Rhymney production facility.
Benefits of Viscocel Fibre & Pellets
Both Viscocel 450 and 500 pellets deliver cleaner handling along with greater reliability and consistency of dispersion in the SMA mix. They are engineered to avoid clumping in the mix and/or longer mixing times. In the case of the 500 pellet, the product is refiberised through Excel Industries' patented SMART refiberising equipment, meaning that loose fibre is added directly to the mix. The 450 pellet is added directly to the mix in low melt, 'throw in' bags or via a silo handling system and breaks up through the aggression within the mixing process.
Once delivered to the asphalt mix, using the appropriate delivery system, both pellet formulations provide the performance benefits of Excel’s HAPAS-approved Viscocel LF SMA loose fibre.
Performance Benefits of Viscocel SMA Fibre
Once dispersed in the SMA, all Viscocel fibre products are designed to hold the bitumen in place by creating a lattice, which binds the material together, without impairing the bitumen’s ability to adhere to the stone aggregate.
Guaranteed Consistency
This performance results from the closely controlled manufacturing process that ensures correctly engineered fibres are produced batch after batch and, in the case of pellet products, the fibre is precisely pelletised so that it holds firmly together during handling and transportation, but breaks up and disperses readily when added directly to the SMA mix or delivered through the SMART refirbreising system (as appropriate).
This results in superb consistency across the laid road surface and, consequently, a repeatable high level of performance.
Inherent Qualities
The lattice created by Viscocel’s long, interwoven fibres gives the SMA more elasticity, making it less brittle and more able to withstand continual heavy loading.
Independent trials, undertaken by Scott Wilson Pavement Engineering and the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) on SMAs manufactured using Viscocel fibre, show that Viscocel SMAs also exhibit superior stiffness and, therefore, improved load spreading ability, along with a greater capacity to hold bitumen in position around the stone aggregate.
This is particularly important in thin pavement structures, where the benefits associated with thinner road coverings are complemented by excellent durability and longevity.
Independent Testing
Viscocel fibre has been tested by the most respected testing authorities in Europe and the USA and shown to be free from mould growth or swelling over the lifetime of a road. Extended accelerated ageing trials, with Viscocel SMA subjected to water and soil bacteria, demonstrate the product’s resistance to rotting and premature degradation. *
Viscocel has shown exceptional performance at critical low temperatures, with the properties of tested SMA remaining constant throughout the low temperature spectrum: ‘a unique benefit in asphalt modification’. In addition, Viscocel’s ability to improve high temperature stiffness, without deteriorating low temperature flexibility, offers ‘a substantial performance benefit’. **

Checked, Tested and Proven
Viscocel and derivative products have now been in mainstream use for around 15 years, providing ample proof of their toughness, durability and ability to stand the test of time.
