Essex Councillor Sets Recycling Example
Date: 4 July 2003
Essex councillor and chair of ReMaDe Essex, Kay Twitchen has shown how every household in the country can play its part in recycling waste products to benefit the environment, while doing themselves a favour by cutting their heating bills. Kay has had the loft in her own home insulated with recycled newspaper insulation, manufactured by Excel Building Solutions of Ebbw Vale, Gwent.
The recycled newspaper insulation, known as ‘Warmcel’, is one of the best performing insulation materials on the market, leading to a warmer home, smaller heating bills and reduced CO2 emissions into the environment.
Commenting on the move to insulate her home with recycled newspaper, Kay said: "Warmcel is a marvellous product - made of recycled paper, safe to handle, and with exceptional insulation and fire-retarding properties. So as far as the environment is concerned it's a win-win situation, and I'm delighted to be able to use it to insulate my home. I hope many other householders will look at this material when they think about loft insulation."
Specialist Warmcel installer, West Anglia Insulation, installed 250mm of insulation into Kay’s loft, which, along with draft proofing around the doors and windows of the house, will help to reduce heating costs by as much as 25%.
As well as recycling newspaper that would otherwise be classed as household waste and finish on a rubbish tip or in a landfill site, Warmcel has the added environmental benefit of reducing the heating needed to keep a house warm and so reduce the carbon emissions produced by a domestic boiler. For the household itself, this means a warmer home and savings on their heating bills.
Manufactured from 100% recycled newspaper, Warmcel has extremely low embodied energy, requiring far less energy to produce than many other insulation materials. It is completely safe to handle, non-irritant and is free from CFCs and VOCs. Importantly, Warmcel also has reassuringly exceptional resistance to fire, which is achieved by the addition of simple non-reacting compounds impregnated into the material during manufacture, and has full building industry BBA-approval.
With an impressive thermal conductivity value (k) of only 0.036 W/mK, Warmcel’s ‘in use’ performance is further enhanced by its ability to create a high level of airtightness to help prevent thermal convection currents and, consequently, heat loss.
A number of grant schemes aimed at promoting energy efficiency are available for anybody who wishes to follow Kay’s example. Details of these are available from local energy efficiency centres.
