Sarket Sheathing Delivers Airtight Joints
Date: 11 June 2003

Excel Building Solutions’ Sarket external sheathing board provides a totally airtight sheathing solution for timber and steel frame buildings.  Because of its  interlocking tongue and groove design, the airtightness of the board also extends to joints between boards, which on flat edged boards would have to be taped up or otherwise sealed to ensure complete airtightness.

Sarket is an 18mm thick, bitumen-impregnated soft fibreboard, designed for use as a combined sarking/sheathing and breather membrane.  A special high density layer on the board’s top face provides a high degree of watertightness, while simultaneously satisfying the water vapour permeability requirement for EVT-compliant structures.  Sarket also provides excellent levels of insulation.

The tongue and groove profiled edges, which extend to all four sides of the board, facilitate mid-span joining to create an extremely stable interlocking covering, as well as being totally airtight.  Since the sheathing has to provide weather resistance until the external cladding has been installed, the tongue and groove joint also plays an important role in preventing water ingress.  This interlocking capability also minimises wastage, since full length boards can be laid without having to ensure joints are lined up with the studs of the structure.

Sarket was developed in Norway in close co-operation with the Norwegian Building Research Institute (NBI) - a member of the European Union of Agrement (UEAtc) and the European Organisation for Technical Approvals (EOTA).

EVT-compliant structures incorporate superior levels of insulation and have the ability to self-regulate moisture content in such a way that natural moisture ingress into the structure always migrates safely and completely to the external atmosphere where it is harmlessly expelled.

EVT-compliant structures are built to specific construction and performance criteria, utilising approved component materials that have been carefully selected and exhaustively tested to provide the perfect balance of vapour resistivity and permeability, while providing U values well beyond building regulations requirements.
