Warmcel Cuts Heating Bills for Council Tenants
Date: 31 March 2003
Tenants of Tendring District Council in Essex are benefiting from reduced heating bills following the installation of Excel Building Solutions’ high performance Warmcel RF loft insulation in the lofts of more than 200 council properties in and around Bradfield and Clacton-on-Sea as part of the first two months of the council’s insulation improvement programme.
Warmcel RF was specified by Tendring District Council in consultation with its Tenants Panel Representatives, because of its excellent thermal performance allied to inherent environmental credentials. Manufactured from recycled newspaper by Excel, Warmcel has low embodied energy and zero ODP (ozone depletion potential), providing a solution to many of the environmental issues faced by the council, by reducing both CO2 emissions and the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.
Warmcel RF was pumped into the loft cavities of the properties by specialist Warmcel installer, West Anglia Insulation, delivering a U value of 0.16 W/m2K and providing levels of insulation in line with, or beyond, current Building Regulations requirements.
Tadeusz Bojanczyk, Tendring District Council Senior Building Surveyor, commenting on the specification of Warmcel RF to improve the thermal performance of the council’s housing stock, said: The council has a policy
of maximising energy-efficiency in its properties. We originally saw Warmcel RF used on other projects and were impressed by both its green credentials and thermal performance. Installation is very quick and easy and the material is much more pleasant to handle than some other insulation materials.
BBA-approved, Warmcel RF is extremely resistant to fire, comfortably meeting the fire protection requirement for lofts. It is also free from harmful or toxic substances, including VOCs, CFCs and added formaldehyde, resistant to biological and fungal attack, treated against insects and is unattractive to vermin.
