Warmcel Insulation Meets Proposed U-value Revisions
Date: 18 October 2004

Excel Building Solutions has developed an insulation solution that will enable standard timber frame walls to achieve the expected reduction in Building Regulations U values, without having to increase stud depth to accommodate additional insulation thicknesses. Utilising its proven Warmcel 500 wall insulation product, Excel has developed an installation process for use on standard 140mm deep timber stud walls sheathed externally with OSB, plywood or similar board. The solution delivers a U-value better than 0.025 W/m2K in contrast to the expected revision that will see the U-value requirement for walls tighten from 0.035 W/m2K to 0.027 W/m2K.

The installation process can also be used on the current industry standard 90mm stud construction with Panelvent external sheathing to exceed the present Building Regulations U-value requirement for walls in England and Wales of 0.035 W/m2K.

The installation method devised by Excel allows Warmcel 500 to be injected into the wall panel cavity prior to the internal plasterboard being applied. The insulation is simply pumped into place behind a scrim covering, which is stapled into position on the internal face of the panel before filling. Once the Warmcel 500 has been installed, the plasterboard is simply applied to provide the internal finish as normal.

Warmcel 500 has an impressive thermal conductivity value (k) of only 0.036 W/mK, delivering excellent insulation performance. In practice, Warmcel’s performance is further enhanced by its ability to create a high level of air-tightness to prevent thermal convection currents. The installation process ensures the insulation provides a complete seal within the wall panel to minimise heat loss, eliminating gaps, cracks or other cold bridges.

Manufactured from 100% recycled waste newspaper, Warmcel 500 has extremely low embodied energy, requiring far less energy to produce than any other mainstream insulation material.

Importantly, Warmcel 500 is extremely resistant to fire. Its fire resistance is achieved through the addition of simple inorganic salts, enabling it to comfortably meet the fire protection standards required for timber-frame construction. Warmcel is also formulated to protect it against any potential hazards that may be encountered in use. It is resistant to biological and fungal attack, treated against insects and is unattractive to vermin.

It does not contain any added formaldehyde and is free from CFCs, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other toxic substances. And by reducing heating demand, Warmcel also plays a major part in reducing household CO2 emissions.

When, eventually, Warmcel insulation is removed from a building, it can be recycled again or disposed of safely, without creating toxic waste or biodegradability problems. Warmcel is also harmless to other common building components such as copper pipes, electric cabling and metal nail-plate fasteners.

Excel Building Solutions is a division of Excel Industries Limited, based in Rhymney, Gwent and is the UK’s leading supplier of innovative building solutions. The company manufactures high performance insulation products, Warmcel 500 for walls and Warmcel 300 for lofts; along with high performance sheathing boards: Panelvent, Bitvent and Paneline; and Sarket roof sarking. Together, these components combine to form the high performance EVT Technology Solution for walls, floors and roofs and the factory-produced TRADIS range of wall panels, floor cassettes and roof plates. In addition to building solutions, Excel manufactures a range of speciality fibres for road making and diverse industrial applications.
