Phytofibre Scores A Cost Saving On and Off the Pitch
Date: 26 March 2004

A cost comparison between Excel Fibre Technology's grass seeding mulch, Phytofibre, and high-quality topsoil has demonstrated savings of between 50 - 75 per cent can be made when using Phytofibre. At a cost of around £4,000 for grassing a typical football pitch using high quality topsoil, the savings using Phytofibre grass seeding mulch would be over £2,000.

Designed not only for use on football pitches, Phytofibre can be used in a variety of other applications including: embankments, golf courses and land reclamation sites. Phytofibre provides contractors and developers with a high performance, cost effective solution to grassing large areas.

Phytofibre also provides additional benefits, such as reduced transportation costs, and it eliminates the risk of introducing contamination to an area, a possibility with topsoil. For example, topsoil could contain the rhizome (underground stem) for the voracious weed, Japanese Knotweed. Renowned for its vigorous growth, Knotweed can devastate native plants, by depriving them of their water and nutrient supply.

Phytofibre provides grass seed with a constant water supply before, and during, germination, helping to promote its growth. By enveloping the seed completely in a protective mesh, Phytofibre's fibres also provide protection from bird attack and safeguard against the seed being washed away by rain, or blown away by wind.

When mixed with seed, fertiliser, water and optional tackifier, Phytofibre forms a homogenous slurry that is easily sprayed in a single application to create a smooth even covering, on any soil type.

Manufactured from 100 per cent recycled newspaper. Phytofibre is non-toxic and non-irritant and is completely safe to handle without special protective clothing. Phytofibre biodegrades naturally, without the need for catalytic additives and, as it decomposes, returns precious nutrients to the soil.

Excel Fibre Technology, a division of Excel Industries Limited of Rhymney in Gwent, is the UK's leading manufacturer of speciality fibres and fibre delivery systems. In addition to Phytofibre hydro-seeding mulch, Excel manufactures a range of products for use in varied industrial applications as well as roadmaking and the building and construction industry.
