Really Green Sheathing Boards
26 November 2004
Excel Building Solutions has introduced green-coloured versions of its successful Panelvent and Paneline EVT sheathing boards, underlining the environmental credentials of the boards. In addition to being easily recognisable and emphasising the 'greenness' of a building while under construction, the green-coloured boards deliver the proven benefits of Excel's conventional, buff-coloured sheathing panels, which include true sustainability, low embodied energy, reduced formaldehyde, excellent sheathing performance and EVT compliance.
Manufactured entirely from wood waste and forest thinnings, Panelvent and Paneline use natural waxes to achieve the necessary sheathing performance - and do not contain Bitumen or preservative treatment - making the boards easier to handle and safe to dispose of at the end of their life.
Panelvent is a highly effective 9.2mm external sheathing board, combining superb racking strength with excellent weather resistance to sheath the external, cavity-side face of EVT structures. Paneline is a 6.4mm thick internal sheathing board, which, when used in combination with Panelvent, provides a balanced level of vapour resistivity for optimum EVT performance.
Panelvent and Paneline have extremely low embodied energy, since they require far less energy to produce than other types of sheathing material. The curing process used during manufacture also removes much of the naturally occurring formaldehyde from the timber, and the boards therefore emit less formaldehyde than unprocessed timber. The reduced formaldehyde content of the boards is also beneficial for people with allergies.
Because Panelvent is produced specifically for use with EVT structures, it offers excellent vapour permeability - allowing moisture to migrate from the inside to the outside of the structure - reducing the risk of interstitial condensation. Paneline’s formulation has been developed to provide the required vapour resistance, in combination with Panelvent, to control the migration of water vapour through an EVT panel, to the exterior.
In addition to its high racking strength, Panelvent is naturally weather resistant, providing a water vapour transmission resistance of 1.47 MNs/g, in contrast to plywood, which has a typical resistance of 4.78 MNs/g. Furthermore, in a normal setting, Panelvent does not require breather paper. Paneline also offers a degree of weather protection through the addition of natural waxes, enabling construction to continue even during inclement conditions.
Panelvent and Paneline boards are easy to cut and install, and use the same nail gun settings as plywood. Using the timber's natural lignin as a binding agent removes the need for glue during manufacture. Because there are no glue lines, the boards cannot become delaminated, a major advantage for sheathing boards.
An EVT construction (used as a structural wall or roof) combines high levels of insulation with the ability to control the migration of any moisture that gets into the structure (which happens in any inhabited building) to the external side of the structure where it is harmlessly expelled to the atmosphere. This action, known as ‘Enhance Vapour Transfer’ or EVT, ensures that interstitial condensation does not occur, thereby protecting the timber structure throughout the lifetime of the building.
