Excel Ups Production of Warmcel Insulation
30 July 2004
Excel Building Solutions has increased production of its Warmcel high performance building insulation products, following an increase in demand from installers and specifiers. The move coincides with Excel’s relocation earlier in the year to a new purpose-built manufacturing facility and industry reports of supply shortages of alternative insulation materials. In some cases, the limited supply of non-Warmcel insulation materials has resulted in substantial price increases for these other insulation products.
Ian Clough, Commercial Manager of Excel said of the company’s increase in production: “The new production facility immediately doubled the output of Warmcel and is part of a long-term programme which reflects an ongoing increase in demand for Warmcel and other Excel fibre products. Importantly, the new facility will enable us to easily increase output by another 200% or 300% to service the shortages installers are currently experiencing with other materials.
“Even better news for installers is that we won’t be looking to take advantage of rising prices being charged for competitors’ insulation products and intend to hold the cost of Warmcel at its present level, making it extremely cost-competitive on a kilogram per kilogram basis, notwithstanding its superior insulation performance and other inherent benefits.”
The current Warmcel range includes Warmcel 500 wall, floor and roof insulation; Warmcel 300 and Warmcel RF loft insulation and Warmcel 100, DIY loft insulation.
Warmcel has an impressive thermal conductivity value (k) of only 0.036 W/mK, delivering excellent insulation performance. In practice, Warmcel’s performance is further enhanced by its ability to create a high level of air-tightness and eliminate gaps, thereby preventing thermal convection currents and minimising heat loss.
A loose-fill insulation material, Warmcel is installed by registered installers using specialist equipment and techniques to optimise insulation performance, while minimising installation time on site.
Manufactured from 100% recycled waste newspaper, Warmcel does not contain any added formaldehyde and is free from CFCs, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other toxic substances. As such, it does not require protective clothing to be worn during installation. Warmcel is also harmless to other common building components such as copper pipes, electric cabling and metal nail-plate fasteners.
Requiring far less energy to produce than any other mainstream insulation material, Warmcel has extremely low embodied energy, and by reducing heating demand, it also plays a major part in reducing household CO2 emissions.
Importantly, Warmcel is extremely resistant to fire. Its fire resistance is achieved through the addition of simple inorganic salts, enabling it to comfortably meet the fire protection standards required for timber-frame construction. It is also formulated to protect it against any potential hazards that may be encountered in use. It is resistant to biological and fungal attack, treated against insects and is unattractive to vermin.
When, eventually, Warmcel insulation is removed from a building, it can be recycled again or disposed of safely, without creating toxic waste or biodegradability problems.
Excel Building Solutions is a division of Excel Industries Limited and is the UK’s leading supplier of innovative building solutions. The company is the UK supplier of the Engineered I Beam Building System for walls, floors and roofs; the Warmcel range of high performance insulation; Panelvent, Bitvent and Paneline sheathing; and Sarket roof sarking. Together, these components combine to form the high performance EVT Technology Solution for walls, floors and roofs and the factory-produced TRADIS range of wall panels, floor cassettes and roof plates. In addition to building solutions, Excel manufactures a range of speciality fibres for road making and diverse industrial applications.
