EVT Panels are Primary Building Solution for Suffolk CC
31 March 2004
Excel Building Solutions’ EVT panels have provided the teachers and pupils of Beaumont Primary School in Hadleigh, Suffolk with a warm and healthy building structure for the new, sustainable and energy efficient school. The 220mm deep wall panels of the school deliver a U value of 0.165 W/m2K, over twice the requirement of the current building regulations.
Designed by Suffolk County Council's Property Division Design Group and built by main contractor, Barnes Construction, the £2 million, 1,200 m sq. single storey building accommodates 140 pupils aged 5-11 years and a further 25 pre-school children in an integral nursery unit. As well as being conceived to minimise environmental impact, the building has also been designed to require minimal maintenance, thereby reducing its overall lifecycle costs.
The factory-manufactured EVT panels used to construct the school feature a 220mm stud frame with an external sheathing of Panelvent and an internal sheathing of Paneline. The cavity of the panels is filled to its full depth with Warmcel 500 high performance insulation. Manufactured from recycled newspaper, Warmcel offers both excellent thermal insulation and environmental credentials, having the lowest embodied energy of any mainstream insulation material.
In addition to superior insulation, the 'EVT' panels ensure that normal moisture ingress into the structure, which occurs in any inhabited building, migrates to the external atmosphere, where it is harmlessly expelled. This effect is known as enhanced vapour transfer or 'EVT' and prevents the occurrence of interstitial condensation, thus safeguarding the structure for the lifetime of the building. The external EVT walls of the school are clad in untreated western red cedar. A living green sedum roof, providing excellent insulation as well as a habitat for birds, butterflies and insects, completes the external appearance of the school.
Complementing the highly insulted building structure, the school design incorporates sustainable building materials throughout and includes a number of energy efficiency measures to reduce its artificial lighting and heating requirement. Energy producing features include a wind turbine, photo voltaic cells mounted on a specially sloped roof and solar panels. The building has also been designed to utilise the maximum amount of daylight possible, reducing the need for artificial lighting.
Designated an 'Eco-school', Beaumont Primary School actively involves the pupils in the development of the school environment and makes environmental issues part of the daily life. All sources of renewable energy in the school building, along with heating and water usage are monitored electronically using a 'building management system'. This information is displayed in simple graphics on a touch sensitive screen in the school's main entrance foyer, allowing pupils to learn and understand more about generating and saving energy, as well as caring for the environment.
