EVT Makes More Room For School Pupils
15 April 2005
An Excel Building Solutions EVT construction has been specified by architects, the Bryant Harvey Partnership, to provide the structural external envelope for an additional school building at the award-winning Notley Green Primary School in Braintree, Essex.
The original Notley Green School building was the result of a design competition run by the Design Council and Essex County Council to produce a high quality building, incorporating the principles of sustainable construction, within a standard county council budget. The phase II development continues the sustainable philosophy of the original design with an all timber construction and a green sedum roof.
Mimicking the geometry of the original structure, which was designed in a striking triangular plan format, the new building has a footprint resembling a segment of a circle, accommodating six new classrooms, a library, a second hall, staff room, stores, associated staff and pupils toilets, hygiene suite, circulation areas, cloakrooms and plant rooms.
The EVT structure of engineered timber 'I' beams, Panelvent external sheathing, high performance Warmcel 500 insulation - all supplied by Excel - and plasterboard internal finish was specified for its environmental and sustainable pedigree combined with its impressive in-use performance. This includes extremely high levels of insulation and the ability to self-regulate moisture content to safeguard the structure from interstitial condensation.
The engineered timber 'I' beams formed the structural framework for the external walls of the new building, including the curved elevation. Panelvent external sheathing board, and plasterboard on the internal face, were used to enclose the wall ‘void’, which was then insulated with Warmcel 500 insulation to complete the EVT technology construction.
Warmcel 500 is manufactured by Excel from recycled newspaper, impregnated with simple inorganic salts to provide outstanding fire resistance. It was dry injected into the walls using the Excel-developed TurboFill system, creating an airtight structure. The performance of the EVT construction benefits from the mechanical interaction between the 'I' beam studs and the Warmcel 500, which ‘locks’ into the profile of the studs, thereby maximising the airtightness of the walls, along with their fire and insulation performance.
The roof construction is also created using engineered timber 'I' beams, which support a living green sedum roof on a plywood deck, providing the insulation and external finish. The external walls of the building are clad in cedar timber to match the existing building finish.
Notley Green County Primary School’s second building is around 2/3 the size of the original 1044m2 single storey structure and is linked to the main building by means of a covered walkway.
Excel Building Solutions is a division of Excel Industries Limited, based in Rhymney, Gwent and is the UK’s leading supplier of innovative building solutions. The company manufactures high performance insulation products, Warmcel 500 for walls and Warmcel 300 for lofts; along with high performance sheathing boards: Panelvent and Paneline; and Sarket roof sarking. Together, these components combine to form the high performance EVT Technology Solution for walls, floors and roofs and the factory-produced TRADIS range of wall panels, floor cassettes and roof plates. In addition to building solutions, Excel manufactures a range of speciality fibres for road making and diverse industrial applications.
