Excel Wins Innovation Award
27 March 2006
Rhymney-based Excel Industries has been recognised in the Welsh Development Agency's SMARTCymru 'Celebration of Innovation Awards'. The judges awarded Excel the Technology Exploitation Programme Collaboration Award for the development work undertaken in creating commercial opportunities for two of the company's recycled newspaper fibre products.
The award specifically relates to the creation of a fibre modifier for anti-skid road surface layers and the work undertaken in achieving fire resistance certification from the nationally-recognised Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) for the company's Warmcel range of high performance building insulation.
In the anti-skid road surface layer, which is commonly seen at traffic lights and roundabouts, the fibre material reduces drainage of the freshly laid anti-skid material into the porous road surface, increasing the toughness and durability of the anti-skid surface and creating a stronger bond between the material and the asphalt road surface. This leads to increased road safety and longevity of the anti-skid layer.
LPCB accreditation for building insulation is required by some specifying authorities and insurance companies. By gaining the accreditation, Excel's Warmcel range now qualifies to be used in such applications, opening up further commercial possibilities for the already successful product.
The award was presented to Excel's technical director, Neil Turner, by Andrew Davies, Welsh Assembly Minister for Economic Development and Transport, at a presentation ceremony held at Newport's Celtic Manor.
Commenting on the award, Neil Turner said: "Winning this award is really important for Excel, as we are keen to demonstrate the strength of our ongoing research and development work, which enables us to create new applications for our fibre products. Award recognition such as this gives us greater credibility with customers in new markets and helps boost our profile locally, at the same time generating a feel-good factor amongst our own employees."
As part of the award, an Excel employee will also take part in a week long 'International Learning Journey' to the USA, where they will meet, learn and interact with some of the world's leading corporations, such as Microsoft, Boeing, Oracle and Apple.
