Insulation of Choice for Green Self Builders
28 July 2006

Excel Building Solutions’ Warmcel insulation is the ‘insulation of choice’ for self-builders who want to use building materials from sustainable sources and minimise environmental impacts. Once in place, Warmcel’s high levels of insulation help to reduce heating bills and create a healthy living environment.

Manufactured entirely from recycled newspaper, Warmcel cellulose fibre insulation is created using a purely mechanical process to transform the newspaper back into its raw fibrous state, suitable for use as building insulation. As such, it has extremely low embodied energy. It is also free from CFCs, VOCs or other harmful substances and has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP). This has resulted in Warmcel achieving an excellent BRE environmental rating.

Warmcel’s very low thermal conductivity delivers excellent insulation performance, enabling revised Part L Building Regulations requirements to be met more easily. In practice, Warmcel’s performance is further enhanced by its ability to create a high level of airtightness to prevent thermal convection currents. By reducing heating demand, Warmcel plays a major part in reducing household CO2 emissions.

A growing number of Warmcel-insulated houses are being designed and constructed without any requirement for space heating; made possible because of the insulation performance of Warmcel. Such houses, known as ‘zero heating homes’, generate sufficient heat from electrical appliances in the home and as a by-product of water heating to negate the need for a separate space heating system.

Warmcel products are available for the insulation of walls, floors and ‘warm roofs’ in timber frame homes, and for loft insulation for any house structure. Timber frame walls, floors and roofs are insulated with Warmcel 500, installed by registered, specialist installers using purpose-designed installation systems to achieve optimum installation performance.

Lofts can either be insulated by hand, using Warmcel 100 DIY insulation or, if preferred, by a registered installer using specialist installation equipment.

Because of its loose-fill nature, the Warmcel fibre completely fills wall, floor or roof voids and loft floors, getting into every nook and cranny, even around pipework, wiring and other obstructions. This eradication of gaps and air pockets, difficult to achieve with quilt-type materials, ensures optimum ‘in use’ insulation performance is achieved.

Importantly, Warmcel is extremely resistant to fire and comfortably meets the fire protection standards required for timber-frame construction, having been awarded LPCB 1181 Part 2 when installed as part of an Excel approved system. Its fire resistance is achieved through the addition of simple, inorganic salts. It is also formulated to protect it against any potential hazards that may be encountered in use; it is resistant to biological and fungal attack, treated against insects and is unattractive to vermin.

Satisfying a further key concern of environmentally-conscious self-builders, is Warmcel’s ability to be removed from a home at the end of the building’s life and returned to Excel’s manufacturing facility to be reused as insulation or another of the company’s fibre products.
